HELPING YOU BALANCE

The art of focused practice

Welcome to my dedicated blog on exploring ways to improve your craft, fine-tuning your writing and unique voice. To me, this is a lifelong journey of growth, which began over twenty-five years ago. My expanding library of posts are here for you to dip into at your leisure. They are graded by three levels of detail to suit your personal needs.

Build confidence in your story

Writing techniques enhance fiction and non-fiction ‘stories’ when used well. However, focusing on these can be challenging for authors already juggling character problems and other story elements.

How can you master such techniques so they don’t interfere with your creative process?

Perhaps by reading craft blogs on our website in bitesize snippets once or twice a week at your convenience? It’s faster than a course, and you can look up specifics as needed. Your confidence will grow as you increase your craft knowledge, fostering a mutual relationship with your story for development and enrichment.

The Depth of Story Components Matter

Some authors are natural-born storytellers: prose pours out fully-formed, with a minimal touch of polishing to work in. For most, however, we have to work a little harder.

I am mindful of story components which are invisible to the reader yet enhance their experience while reading your work. It’s not like you have to learn this stuff again each time you start a new project. Some of it sticks in the subconscious and flows from your pen or keyboard like an invisible thread, weaving your story together with stronger bonds.

How deep will you go?

When you are ready, why not consider exploring a technique deeper to enhance your use? The more proficient you are, the more seamless the story becomes to the reader.

Navigate posts with ease

Each post is grouped around a pillar category such as ‘Character’. In each category, the posts are defined using icons, so you can go to the level you wish to explore. For example:
